DeSantis briefed Thursday on the situation after the storm passed. As expected, Ian had left a great devastation in southwest Florida. Hospitals and homes were flooded, and millions of people lacked electricity.
The city of Fort Myers, a popular tourist destination with more than 80,000 residents, was one of the hardest-hit places.
US President Joe Biden has declared disaster in the state following the damage from the hurricane, allowing federal authorities to assist in cleanup work.
According to TV channel Fox News more than 2.5 million people lack electricity in US states after the devastation.
– Lee and Charlotte are basically unconnected right now, DeSantis said according to the TV channel.
Florida’s Republican governor called the rampage a “500 years” event, Fox reports.
– The devastation after a hurricane is historic. I don’t think we’ve ever seen an event like this before. This will cause great damage to people’s homes.
Most Florida school districts are scheduled to reopen on Friday or Monday.
It is not known how many people lost their lives in the storm.
CNN reported that the Florida Coast Guard reported that they had rescued 23 people in the past 24 hours.
