Amazon is overhauling its UK operations

US e-commerce giant Amazon announced a UK reorganization on Tuesday that involves closing three distribution centers employing 1,200 people, but with plans to open two more factories with 2,500 workers.

The plan to close three warehouses affects 1,200 employees at the Hemel Hempstead center near London, the Doncaster and Gourock centres, which are in Scotland.

However, the company emphasized that the employees will have the opportunity to be transferred to another distribution center owned by the company which has 30 warehouses in the country.

New sites will open near Birmingham to the west and in Durham to the north.

The reorganization is unrelated to Amazon’s announcement last week that it would cut 18,000 jobs worldwide, a company spokesperson said.
