A state of emergency has been declared after a powerful tornado hit the state capital of Arkansas on Friday. A local TV station said 600 people were injured.
The tornado hit and around Little Rock on Friday afternoon. It turned roofs to tile, overturned vehicles and threw debris onto roads, while people sought shelter from the storm.
More than 350,000 people are at risk from what the National Weather Service called a large, destructive tornado that tore through business districts and the surrounding environment.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the tornado had done significant damage in the central part of the state. He stated that the emergency services were working to help all the injured people. Hospitals are preparing to receive many injured people.
Reuters quoted local TV stations as saying that at least 600 people were injured, but did not say how serious their injuries were.
Strong storms threatened Friday in at least 15 states in the Midwest and southern United States. Meteorologists urge people to be prepared for extreme weather, including tornadoes.
These conditions are compared with that hit the state of Mississippi a week ago.
More than 85 million people are protected by Friday’s hurricane warnings. The National Weather Service is reporting an unusually severe thunderstorm with a chance of hail, gusts of wind and tornadoes. (© NTB)
