Odd Coach penalizes VAR: – The second was an actual mistake
The Vikings struggled for a long time at home against a tight-fisted Odd but made it 3-2 thanks to two penalties and a late goal from Sander Svendsen.
There was full jubilation among the home fans in Stavanger when Svendsen scored the winner in the 87th minute. This victory brought Viking up to 2nd place in the elite series table.
Odd fans have even more reason to be upset, perhaps mainly due to Zlatko Tripic’s last two penalties.
VAR was called to check whether Milan Jevtovic’s hand had gone inside the 16-metre area, and referee Kristoffer Hagenes opted to award a penalty despite replays broadcast on TV showing Odd’s arm outside.
Odd Pål coach Arne Johansen is far from satisfied:
– We should have done better in the second half, but at the same time it’s bittersweet that we dropped points on at least one – maybe two – wrong penalties, he told NRK.
He acknowledged that the first was a discretionary assessment. He was even more critical of the others.
– The second is an actual mistake. The ball was outside when it hit the hand, he said, and pointed to the widescreen image.
– At least from all the angles shown here in the stadium, so it’s very clear on the outside.
Judge Hagenes defended the decision.
– I scored the penalty kick, which was clear and obvious to me, then there was a VAR check whether it was on the outside or on the inside, and that’s an interesting assessment. They took their time and saw that there was nothing to say on the outside, so they stood by the penalty kick decision, he said, and continued:
– Here, there are also a few camera angles. I’m a little unsure how many cameras are being produced today, it’s clear that it’s all about what evidence you have. And the VAR must have clear evidence, “clear and obvious wrongdoing”, to be able to verify what was assessed, said Hagenes
