MADRID, July 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, this Thursday announced a pay increase of between five and seven percent for civil servants with the aim of ending the multiple strikes waged by the public sector over the last few weeks.
Thus, the salary of Polri employees will increase by seven percent, the same as that of prison employees; teacher salaries will increase by 6.5 percent, while the National Health Service and resident doctors will receive a six percent increase. The Armed Forces will benefit from a seven percent increase.
The measure was approved by Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt and benefits around 45 per cent of civil servants. The government stressed that these increases would not be financed by increased taxes, but by “existing” departmental budgets.
Similarly, Sunak confirmed that this “offer” was his last, assuring that “there will be no more wage negotiations.” “Budgets are unlimited. When someone asks for a higher salary, it always creates pressure elsewhere”, the ‘prime minister’ recounted.
The stark increase in wages has been very well received by the main unions in the country, so much so that four Education unions have called on employees to end the strike, reported the Sky News television channel.
“The increase of 6.5 percent (…) recognizes the important role of teachers in our country and ensures that teaching will continue to be an attractive profession,” said the working group.
For its part, health unions benefited from a six percent increase, though it was a far cry from the more than 35 percent increase they had demanded. In the case of resident doctors, an additional payment of 1,250 pounds has also been approved, more than 1,460 euros.
