Sport came to a halt across England as Britain paid its last respects to the late regent. Both clubs, individual athletes and other players in the sport posted messages of condolences.

Former soccer star David Beckham, who at the weekend queued for 13 hours to view the king’s coffin at Westminster Hall, was among those posting the tribute on social media.

“Our queen is back. Today we say our final farewell to Her Majesty the Queen. This week the world mourns the loss of a unique, inspiring and caring leader,” he wrote on Instagram.

“People from all walks of life gathered in thousands to show their gratitude to our beloved Queen. In addition to extraordinary ceremonies and traditions, we have seen loving families mourn a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother with dignity and dedication.”

Beckham met the Queen several times during his football career.

Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury was also among the heroes of the sport marking Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.

“I have taken off social media for the past ten days to mourn our deceased queen. I wish his funeral well, my condolences to the whole family, and I wish him rest in heaven for good,” the boxer said.

The English Football League (EFL), which organizes the divisions below the Premier League, was also on the pitch to pay its last respects to the late king.

“On the day of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, the EFL and our clubs will join the nation to reflect on the late Regent’s extraordinary life in service to the country and our thoughts go out to the Royal Family,” he said.

A large number of Premier League clubs also remember the Queen. Southampton posted a photo of the late Regent presenting the FA Cup trophy to club captain Peter Rodrigues after their 1976 victory over Manchester United.

British sport was also heavily represented during funeral services at Westminster Abbey.

The Queen is a patron of a number of sporting institutions, including the British Football Association and the British Olympic Committee.

In 2012, he showcased his acting skills back-to-back with James Bond actor Daniel Craig. It was used in connection with the opening ceremony before the London Olympics.
