A British bank is trying to recover $175 million wrongfully paid over Christmas | International | News

The British subsidiary of Banco Santander mistakenly duplicated 75,000 payments made by some 2,000 customers, bringing the total to 175 million dollars.

British subsidiary of Banco Santander mistakenly distributed 130 million pounds (about $175 million) on Christmas Day What do you expect to recover?

On December 25, due to “technical problems”, 75,000 payments made by approximately 2,000 customers are duplicated in their beneficiary accounts, the bank said on Thursday in a statement sent to AFP, confirming information from the newspaper Time.

Duplicate transactions were charged directly to the bank’s coffers and “there was never a self-paying customer,” Santander said, detailing “working with multiple banks across the UK to recover” the amount in question.

Among the beneficiaries of the transfer are employees or suppliers of several Santander client companies –where they receive a salary or payment twice-.

Transfers were made to accounts at several other UK banks, making it difficult to recover funds, according to The Times.

The newspaper noted that one of those institutions admits not wanting to get the money back if it means the account holder has an overdraft.

Santander claimed to have “quickly identified and corrected” the planning issue that caused the incorrect payment, adding that it opened a “banking error recovery procedure” with the beneficiary bank. (I)
