Column by Fernando Estenssoro: Russia, Ukraine, NATO and the United States What happened?

For Fernando Estenssoro, doctor at American Studies

Over the past few days, Western media have started broadcasting worrying news about the imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine, which will no doubt result in enormous international political instability which could escalate into unforeseen consequences. All this news is formatted under the banner of blaming Russia for its “aggressive” expansionist policies.

What Russia is looking for is to get assurances that NATO does not continue to approach its borders because, faced with the outbreak of a formal war, will have less time to react to Western missile attacks (nuclear and conventional). In this regard, he followed the same US policy of never allowing Russia to install nuclear missiles on Cuba.

However, NATO, pushed by Britain and the United States since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, has sought to get its missiles and troops as close to Red Square as possible. In fact, since 2008 they have tried to include the former Soviet republics of Ukraine and Georgia into NATO. And the current push by the Ukrainian government to be definitively included in NATO is totally unacceptable for Russia’s strategic security. This is a red line that Peter the Great’s heir will never accept. This has been officially communicated by Russia, which is why Western allies reacted with such fury.

Russia’s warning is not a joke or something to be taken lightly. Even Russia asked/warned the US and NATO whether they are willing to carry out nuclear war on Ukraine? And everything indicates that outside of the “media wars”, the West will not cross this red line. In practice, this meant publicly acknowledging that Russia was claiming the point and that NATO’s intentions to encircle them failed. Therefore, one aspect of the media problems that they, especially the US, have to solve is how to get out of this mess without appearing as a “loser”, or in other words, what to do to keep Russia from appearing as the loser. “loser”. the bad guy in the movie.”
