This week, the Secretary of State, Antonia Urrejola, arrived in London to participate on behalf of Chile in Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. However, the chancellor’s video stirred controversy when referring to the monarchy.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejolaarrived in London this Sunday morning to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral.
Upon his arrival, he met with the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Nadhim Zahawi, where they discussed opportunities for bilateral development in renewable energy, oceans, and adaptation to climate change.
Regarding this, the Minister of Finance explained that “we are discussing a series of issues that will be on the agenda later, especially in the about renewable energybut also, obviously, of the role the queen had in the history of Great Britain, in European history and in Western history.”
Then, in the afternoon, he participated in the reception which King Carlos III offered to all invited delegates.
In this context, he stated that he felt “very impressed” and “honored to be able to participate in this historic moment. To be able to see people from different parts of the world, to have the opportunity to talk to people from different cultures, with different visions, and to see the impact the queen has had on world history,” he added.
It should be noted that Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral will take place tomorrow at 11:00.
Furthermore, the Chancellor together with the Chilean Ambassador to the UK, Susana Herrera, will attend a reception offered by the British Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly.
Minister Urrejola’s question notes
Questions arose after a video shared by Minister Urrejola, in which he pointed out that “for Chile, Britain is a friendly country, with whom we have historic bilateral relations, commercial, cultural, affective exchanges, I would even say in my personal case as well. so that I am very happy to be here.”
“It is very important to be able to express our regret over the death of Queen Elizabeth II, she, without a doubt, beyond what can be said about the monarchy, if they agree or disagree with the monarchyWithout a doubt, Queen Elizabeth II has become a historical figure in 20th century history, not only in Britain, but in Europe and throughout the Western world, and that is why we are here today.”
In this regard, lawyer and professor of International Law and International Relations at the University of Concepción, Paulina Astroza, described it as “very bad taste” that the foreign minister said she was happy “when she went as Chile’s representative to the state funeral ceremony.”
He also questions whether he will like the monarchy or not. “Why mention that debate when you go to the funeral of the Head of State who ruled for 70 years not only in Britain but the entire Commonwealth of Nations? Totally out of place comments. Very undiplomatic.”
“We have a lot of relations with the UK so as the representative of Chile, the Foreign Minister
Urrejola gave this misplaced statement. We have too many ‘deviations’ in foreign policy. Low var. I hope they will upload it with a new team”, he concluded.
