Delta Air Lines, the leading airline of the Skyteam alliance of which Air Europa is also a part, canceled its codeshare to Russia’s Aeroflot immediately, this as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it revealed this Sunday. REPORT.us (Delta rejects Aeroflot and cancels its codeshare).
The measure Delta took applies to flights outside Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport and excludes the Aeroflot code from the American-operated flights from Los Angeles and New York-JFK (Spain closed its flights to Russian airlines between the cancellations of S7 and Aeroflot).
After the UK banned Aeroflot from flying on its territory, Delta decided to suspend its codeshare with the Russian airline. Likewise, Russia barred British airlines from its airspace. The FAA also barred US airlines from flying to Ukraine, Belarus and some destinations in western Russia.
The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has also announced that Spain will proceed to close its airspace to Russian airlines, something several European countries have already decided. “Spain will continue to close its airspace to Russian airlines. Following the cooperation guidelines set by the European Union, this action will have an impact on flights operated by Russian airlines using Spanish airspace,” the ministry said on Twitter.
By this measure, Spain joins the United Kingdom, Belgium, Poland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania or Bulgaria. The first to vote for the airspace closure were the governments of Britain, Poland, the Czech Republic or Bulgaria, which announced it last Friday, while Romania began procedures to do the same on Saturday.
The executives of the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – also agreed on Saturday to impose these restrictions. In the case of Germany, it has been decided to start the restrictions starting this Sunday at 15:00 for a period of three months, while Paris will start with action from tonight. These restrictions have forced the cancellation of dozens of flights to European destinations from Moscow’s Domodedovo and Sheremetievo airports.
Likewise, Russian airline S7 Airlines has reported on Facebook the cancellation of many of its flights until at least March 13, while Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline, has canceled its flights to Latvia and Romania until at least March 26. March and to Prague and Warsaw until March 28. Moreover, Russia has responded reciprocally to these steps of European countries.
Aeroflot’s Russian Skyteam alliance has Delta in the United States as its main airline, as well as Air France-KLM in Europe, along with airlines Globalia Air Europa, Ita Italia, Czech Czech Airlines or Romanian taro.
