Sustainable farming, Grupo Xito’s alliance commitment with the UK and WWF

Grupo xito, in alliance with WWF Colombia and the UK Government, announced a project that seeks to continue to conserve ecosystems, protect biodiversity and strengthen practices on farms to increase their meat production with environmental protection factors.

The project called ‘Sustainable consumption and livestock: alliance for conservation and biodiversity’ will fall under the UK Pact programme, which is part of the UK Government, where technical assistance will be provided to develop actions and strategies with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This project is an opportunity for the retail sector in Colombia to strengthen its commitment to the environment, as well as to the economic development of the country.

Carlos Mario Giraldo, president of Grupo Xito, points out the importance of nurturing a sustainable livestock model.

“We are proud to be part of an alliance that strengthens Grupo Xito’s sustainable livestock model. In recent years we have worked with 100% of our direct suppliers of live cattle through awareness and cooperation in ecosystem conservation, meat quality and animal welfare, contributing to the economic, social and environmental development of the country,” said Giraldo.

One of the main goals of the union is to produce biodiversity conservation measures and, in turn, maintain sustainable livestock processes. To that end, it is proposed to strengthen the technical knowledge of direct suppliers of Grupo Xito live cattle in the management and conservation of biodiversity, as well as to forge alliances with local companies to encourage these conservation actions.

Against this, Maggie Charnley, global director of forests in the UK, stated herself and emphasized that “the project is a fundamental step in protecting Colombia’s forest cover. Extensive livestock farming is one of the main drivers of deforestation in the country. , combining efforts with allies this high impact is key, as they can build new business models around sustainable farming that provides high quality food, income for local producers, and helps mitigate climate change.”

The project promoted by this alliance is expected to have a positive impact on raising awareness among customers, suppliers and the retail sector about sustainable production and replicating this business model.
