‘Billions’ opens the new season with a bittersweet taste. On the plus side, he returned on August 11 (a day later in Spain and on Movistar Plus+) and with Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) returned after not participating in the sixth season. This march forced producers to change direction for the series and we saw rival Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) claim his position as the new head of Ax Capital. Of course, it didn’t take long for former federal prosecutor Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) to find a new enemy, this time coming face to face with Prince. On the downside, this is the last time we see a fight in the highest spheres of economics, law and politics.
Lewis left the series at the end of season five. Lewis’ wife, actress Helen McCrory, died at the start of 2021 and Lewis has decided to take a break. He only agreed to shoot the last few chapters if he could do so from England. “We couldn’t have asked her to come to the United States in a situation like that, right after the love of her life had passed away, who was an artist and a wonderful human being,” said Brian Koppelman, co-creator of the series with David Levien. . “This is Damian’s personal life. We feel very fortunate to have worked together for five years with Damian and Paul Giamatti.”
Giamatti, Corey Stoll and Maggie Siff will reprise their roles, along with David Costabile, Asia Kate Dillon, Condola Rashad, Jeffrey DeMunn, Sakina Jaffrey and Daniel Breaker. Additionally, Babak Tafti joins as Bradford Luke, a high-powered political consultant.
“Writing for these actors allows us to have no limitations as screenwriters. We can be bold with our writing because they are able to do it and succeed. There are no limits, other than our own. We can target anyone because we have people who are able to do it and make it work for us,” said Levien, remaining tight-lipped about the content of the new episodes.
A seventh season in which loyalties will be questioned again and those who were previously sworn enemies unite their interests. And of course the game of cat and mouse that is the hallmark of the series is not to be missed. “If there’s anything I love about my character, it’s the emotional waste. Chuck is not interested in money, but power,” explained Giamatti when the last action ‘Billions’ was presented at the beginning of the year.
As for Axelrod, season five concludes with the maestro’s exile to Switzerland to avoid prosecution, so we’ll likely find him there. “I think we enjoy seeing the hopelessness, compromise, and ambiguity that the desire to break the law creates in their lives. But in the real world, these billionaires live on the brink as they try to get information any way they can,” Lewis explained. “They avoid risks because they have enough information to mitigate losses before placing bets. It is both attractive and reprehensible at the same time. That’s what these guys are capable of,” the British actor added.
Charisma
Charisma, wit, and humor are important parts of the personalities of characters who are all villains at the same time. “Initially we targeted hedge fund billionaires who were press shy and didn’t want to be seen as that rich. We’ve seen a shift towards a more public style of billionaires looking to influence public discourse. That’s where Mike Prince comes from,” Koppelman said.
“These are people who are not afraid to do what they want. Their crimes are hidden in their privileges. The world is at your fingertips. These white-collar criminals probably graduated from college and lived somewhere where they didn’t feel in any danger.”
Even if its parent series ends, Showtime has plans to make two ‘spin-offs’ with millionaires in Miami and London, as well as two series with even richer people: ‘Millions’ and ‘Trillions’. “We live fascinated by people whose ambitions are limitless and think that the laws of civilization and nature don’t apply to them. Miami is an important and dynamic place that the super rich are starting to take over. We’re excited to show everyone what’s really going on there,” Koppelman concluded.
