UK freezes accounts of three Russian millionaires due to crisis in Ukraine: who are they

That British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced today economic sanctions against five Russian banks and three businessmen on the decision of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to recognize the independence of two breakaway provinces in eastern Ukraine.

Johnson told deputies in the House of Commons of Parliament that sanctions would reach banks Rossiya Bank, IS Bank, Commercial Bank, Promsvyazbank and the Black Sea Development and Trade Bank.

He added that three Russian millionaires, whose companies decide on energy and infrastructure projects -Gennady Timchenko, Boris Rotenberg and Igor Rotenberg– your assets will be frozen and you will be banned from traveling to the UK.

The three businessmen have been sanctioned by the United States.

Johnson accused Putin of “providing a pretext for a full-scale attack” on Ukraine and said Britain would apply “strong additional sanctions” to Russia if that happened.

He added that Russian tanks and armor were spotted in the Ukrainian provinces Lugansk and Donetsk after Putin yesterday recognized his independence.

Johnson said this represented a “new invasion” of Ukraine by Russia, which in 2014 annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula.

Also today, the British government reported that it summoned Russia’s ambassador in London, Andrei Kevin, to protest Putin’s decision.
