The survey revealed that PIME-related companies experiencing the worst impacts were ‘car rentals’, shops and restaurants
After the excellent results in August last year, Menorca’s tourism entrepreneurs have high hopes for this important month of the tourist season. But expectations have not been met, at least for most PIME-related companies. And on the 4th2.3 percent of tourism businesses claimed that this August they had reduced their bills compared to the same month last year, according to the monthly PIME survey. As many as 35 percent of tourism business actors confirmed that they would maintain it, while 22.7 percent stated that profits were greater
“The season doesn’t even start during August,” complained PIME, assuring that “the new environment in which costs are increasing for all companies, has been compounded by the lower purchasing power of the majority of customers.” This makes tourists come to Menorca together «tight budget and reduced days of stay visitors”, which ends with a lower spending at local tourism companies.
Business people are afraid of it The situation got worse at the end of the seasonespecially considering the loss of connections with the UK and France in the off-season, which “could break the ties these countries maintain in the months when air connections are fewer.”
The situation is uneven by sector. The companies that experienced the worst impact weres local ‘car rental’, where 92 percent reported a decrease in income. They stated that full occupancy had never been reached and rental cars were available around the clock in August, something that does not usually happen.
That Restaurants, shops and maritime companies were also sectors that reported bigger declines in profits, while agrotourism and tourist guest houses are the most stable businesses, because the majority stated that they still maintain their turnover. Active tourism companies deserve special attention, as half of them experienced an increase in revenue, although almost the other half saw a decrease in revenue.
