La Nación / Las Magnolias is positioned in the sheep sector in the country

The Las Magnolias breeder made one of the most important investments with which he would achieve a historic position in this country and South America through the Texel breed. Johanna Botrel, owner of the cabin, commented that after work coordination and negotiations lasting at least 10 months, the first embryos brought directly from the UK arrived in the country.

The farm has been dedicated for a long time to cattle, horses and, in addition, to sheep. Johanna Botrel, the owner of the cabin, told La Nación/Nación Media that since 2019 they started investing in the Texel breed to improve genetics. They started with the acquisition of live animals from Uruguay, pure pedigree animals, and a ram for the father of the herd, also for the same purpose. Then they made a purchase of mutton straws to finally move forward with this huge investment, which they considered a historic event for our country. “Now the most important thing that can happen, which is a historic event for Paraguay, is the arrival of Texel breed embryos, which came from England; They are the first embryos to arrive in our country, so that is something to celebrate at the state level and also for sheep farming and especially for the Texel breed because it is like moving 10 steps forward,” he stressed.

He explained that the embryos were already from father and mother as well as donors from European countries, so that later they would be transferred directly to the recipients who would provide the final product in the form of standing sheep. This helps open up lineages and results in a better chance of obtaining genetic material from them as semen straws or donors from females. Botrel said they achieved this step through the partnership they made with the herd in Uruguay, and indicated that through it they would be able to position themselves and become a center for the distribution of genetic material in South America. While this major move marks a milestone, he noted that much remains to be done, targeting new manufacturers and international markets.
