European leaders are staging their common goal with the first step of a new platform for continental dialogue without Russia or Belarus: the European political community. This is a proposal launched in May by French President Emmanuel Macron, who wants to develop new projects to meet current challenges. “This new European organization will allow democratic European countries that adhere to our values ​​to find new spaces for political and security cooperation,” Macron said at a Europe Day event on May 9.

In the absence, for now, of a common goal, each State comes to the meeting with a specific purpose. For France, this is an opportunity to reconnect Britain with the rest of the continent. For others, the platform may be the start of joining the European Union. But first you have to establish a clear working format. The director of the Eurasia Group, explained to Euronews that he envisions that it will become an “intergovernmental organization”.

“So the countries present will be the main players. It’s not institutionalized or overtly institutionalized, the role of the European Commission and the European Council is quite small and actively being underestimated,” explained Mujtaba Rahman.

While there are still many doubts, the European political community offers an immediate opportunity. “I think the most important outcome in the short term is the outcome of the bilateral meeting that takes place on the sidelines.
