What makes this discovery unique is that a large area of the exposed skeleton was covered in petrified skin, suggesting that there may have been more preserved skin within the rock, paleontologists said.
A fossil that was revealed hadrosaursa large, duck-billed herbivorous dinosaur jutting out of a hillside at Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada, one of the world’s richest places for dinosaur fossils.
According to a team of paleontologists from Reading UniversityEngland, the fossil was first discovered in 2021, when Dr Brian Picklesfrom the university, was conducting a search in the area.
“This is a very exciting find and we look forward to completing the excavation in the next two field expeditions. Based on the small size of the tail and legs, it is likely a young specimen,” said Pickles, lead investigator.
“Although adult duck-billed dinosaurs are well represented in the fossil record, younger animals are much less common. This means the discovery could help paleontologists understand how hadrosaurs grew and developed.”
For his part, Caleb Brown, from Tyrrell Kerajaan Royal MuseumHadrosaurs fossils are relatively common in this part of the world, but what makes this discovery unique is the fact that large areas of the exposed skeleton are covered by petrified skin. This suggests there may have been more skin preserved in the rock, which may give us more information about what the hadrosaurs were like.”
It should be noted that the exact species identification of dinosaur Duckbill would only be possible if a skull was found, which may take years given the size and preservation of this specimen.
