Spanish government sees “willingness to agree” with British in Gibraltar

Alicante (Spain), 24 Oct. Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, said on Monday he saw a “willingness to agree” on the British side to create an “area of ​​shared prosperity” in Gibraltar, after meeting a few weeks ago. at Oxford with his British colleague, James Cleverly.

Albares participated today in an event in the Spanish city of Alicante (southeast), where “Spain, the European Union and the Mediterranean” were discussed, and stressed that he saw “the spirit of reaching an agreement” that would benefit most of the 270,000 people living in Campo de Gibraltar -an area bordering the British colony with the Spanish province of Cádiz-.

The Spanish Foreign Minister stressed that the UK is a “highest level” partner because of existing commercial ties and because some 400,000 Britons live in Spain and participate “actively” in the country.

He also recalled former British Prime Minister Liz Truss’ monetary policies, decisions in the first days of her mandate”, with massive tax cuts, which “harmed the currency itself and forced the Bank of England to intervene”, and triggered a political crisis.
