Spanish start-up KOA Biotech, winner in Global eAwards

Spain’s success in Global Awards hosted by NTT DATA Foundation. Innovative technology developed by Spanish start-up KOABiotech for reduce deaths from infection in fish farms and use of antibiotics, has Winner of this XXI edition.

KOA Biotechbased in Barcelona and founded by a 27 year old human biologist Sira Mogashas achieved the coveted award thanks to the development of a biosensor system, which is able to detect pathogens in water early, prevent their spread, and reduce use of antibiotics.

In this way, he tries to address the frequent problem of these farms from which more than half of the fish we consume comes from. Currently, infection causes death in up to 30% of production and also annually produces several global loss of 6.00 million dollars.

The creator of the winning project, Sira Mogas, is a young scientist with a master’s degree in computational biomedical engineering and a doctorate in biomedical engineering. In his remarks at the event held at the Mandarin Oriental Ritz hotel in Madrid, he thanked the NTT Data Foundation for this recognition, which “will open many doors for us, it will give us visibility, network and it will help us expand the team”

In the final he competed with tech entrepreneurs from 12 other countries (Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Italy, Netherlands, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, England and Romania), winners in their respective national competitions.

This award brings €60,000 . prizewhich is added to the €20,000 received as Spanish eAwards winners, in addition to an intensive and personalized acceleration program.
