YouTube expands the reach of its competitors tik tokYouTube Short Videos, with today’s announcement that they will start rolling out Shorts on TV to their global users.
Updated company smart TV app now will allow users to view vertical videos in a streamlined experience designed to feel more consistent with what users see on mobile, explains YouTube.
Now you can watch YouTube Shorts on Smart TV
It’s a challenge remembering shorts Youtubelike TikTok, it’s mostly meant to be viewed on smaller smartphone screens.
Features of viewing new shorts will need a smart TV 2019 or later, a newer game console or streaming device, notes YouTube.
The video itself can be found in the new Shorts section of the YouTube app’s home page or on the creator’s channel page.
Long road to true Shorts look
In a post on his official blog, the company detailed the various design experiments it investigated to arrive at the final concept for Shorts on TV. He found that short videos didn’t look good on the YouTube app’s conventional video player, which I have too much black space on either side of the vertical video.
He also considered a “jukebox” style format that would place three Shorts side by side to maximize the TV screen without leaving extra space on the sides.
But this experience is not only messy, it deviates from how shorts should look: one by one.
final design
The design that YouTube uses is a special option that try better fill video side with blur background samples in color and lines around the video that look like a smartphone screen.
It then goes further on this format to add more features to the video side, including information about the creator, sounds used in the video, and thumbs up and down buttons.
This information can be displayed by clicking the right button on your remote.
In this initial release, viewers can subscribe to the creator’s channel and like or dislike the video after watching it. The company plans to introduce more community features over time.He says.
While viewing a clip, you can also use the remote control to start or stop the video by clicking directly on the clip or using the button play you Pause.
The short will continue to play until you advance to the next short using your remote. You can use the up and down buttons on the remote to jump to the next video or go back to the previous clip, YouTube says.
The company notes that it’s not uncommon for consumers to prefer using the remote control to move through video shorts, as usual watching videos on TV is more of a relaxing experience.
But in this case, he found that viewers wanted to manually control which short films were played or skipped, just as they would on a mobile device.
Even today YouTube short videos are viewed by more than 1.5 billion registered users every monththere is no way to watch it on the big screen as of now, because the YouTube app doesn’t allow users to stream short films to their TV and the main TV app doesn’t support watching short films.
Shorts will continue to compete with TikTok
Shorts expansion to TV will help YouTube better challenge TikTok, which also launched its own TV app to multiple platforms last year, including Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, Android TV OS, and select LG and Samsung smart TVs in North America.
TikTok also offers TV apps for Google TV and Android TV in the UK, France and Germany, and on Samsung TVs in the UK. But unlike the TikTok TV app, the YouTube TV app has the advantage of being pre-installed on many Smart TV platforms.
Its spread is global. However, users don’t necessarily get direct access to today’s features, because this type of implementation takes time. The company says that all users should be able to see Shorts in the “next few weeks”.
