Multi-faith leaders gather in Israel for ‘climate conversion’

To urge world leaders to act for “climate conversion” and apply the ten climate principles, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists from Israel, Egypt, the United States, India, Spain and the United Kingdom are scheduled to meet on Sunday.

This event is timed to coincide with the climate conference police 27 United Nations which is currently held in Egypt and which ends on 18 November. They are scheduled to be held in Jerusalem, London, the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and other places.

The London event will take place on the grounds of Parliament Hill.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, Istanbul, Swami Chidanand Saraswati of India, Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf of the United States and Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg of London are among the religious leaders expected to attend.

Patriarch Green, also known as Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, condemned “the abuse of nature and exploitation of its resources” as “a sin against God the Creator and the gift of creation” in a statement before the event.

The Elijah Interfaith Institute, environmental advocacy group Adam Teva V’Din, and Rabbi Yonatan Neril’s Interreligious Center for Sustainable Development, all based in Israel, hosted the event.

Considered by many to be the biblical Mount Sinai where Moses received the Ten Commandments, Jabal Musa was originally meant to celebrate a major event.

However, the Egyptian government banned it, citing security concerns.

The Organizer lists the following as the “Ten Principles of Climate Regret”:

  • We are the servants of this world
  • Creation manifests divinity
  • Everything in life is interconnected
  • do no harm
  • take care tomorrow
  • Overcome ego for our world
  • Change our inner climate
  • repent and come back
  • Every Action Matters
  • Use mind, open heart
