Guterres hopes to renew a “very important” agreement to export cereals from Ukraine

MADRID, November 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, believes that the deal to export cereals from Ukraine could be extended beyond this Friday, when the current validity period expires, to the extent that it is “critically important” for food security around the world.

In recent days, the United Nations has maintained contact with Ukrainian and Russian authorities with a view to expanding the pact signed in July and which, so far, has facilitated the export of more than 10.5 million tonnes of grain, according to data from the organization itself.

Guterres, who visited Bali (Indonesia) on the occasion of the G20 Summit, also hoped to meet with the parties to this forum and remove the “final obstacles”, especially those relating to exports of food and fertilizer from Russia. reported by his office.

In this regard, he emphasized that these products are not the direct object of sanctions but that they suffer “indirect effects”. For this reason, the United Nations has contacted the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom, key pillars in successive rounds of penalties adopted in recent months against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

The agreement is “critical for global food security,” according to Guterres, who maintains it is in his interest to “stabilize markets and lower prices.” Any minimal progress, he added, “reduces hunger and saves lives.”
