MADRID, November 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has indicated that if the Venezuelan dialogue develops “as we are starting to see”, the withdrawal of the Spanish ambassador in the country “is a decision that is very capable of being reversed”.
“Spain does not want to see itself without ambassadors in its sister countries in Latin America, neither in Venezuela nor in other countries,” Albares emphasized in an interview published this Saturday in the newspaper ‘El País’, in which he referred to the resumption this weekend of negotiations between the Government and the Venezuelan opposition.
Albares has indicated that in a meeting with the parties on November 11, he was able to verify that the two sides “have the will to reach an agreement” and make the Spanish Government “available in every way that can be useful” within the framework of the talks. , an offer that the parties said they would consider.
Regarding the future return of the Spanish ambassador to Venezuela, the minister stressed that the start of dialogue, which is taking place in Mexico, is a “very good sign.”
Similarly, he cautioned that the sanctions approved by the EU against Latin American countries are meant to promote this dialogue, so if that happens and moves “on the right path”, “none of these (sanctions) measures have a permanent calling.” .
On the other hand, regarding the agreement on Gibraltar, Albares insisted that “Great Britain needs to move forward” and explained that he met with the mayor of Campo de Gibraltar to inform them of the negotiations being carried out by the European Commission. underway with the UK Government for future relations with Gibraltar after Brexit.
Spain’s chief diplomat also assured that “of course” there would be Spanish police at Gibraltar’s port and airport. “If there is an extension (to Gibraltar) from Schengen, the Spanish police, who are responsible to Schengen, must exercise this control,” he said.
