Representatives of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU) gave a joint statement, following the conclusion of a new agreement between the government of Venezuela and the Platform for Democratic Unity, for the resumption of dialogue in Mexico.

In a press release, they indicated that the statement-makers were: EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell Fontelles; United States Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken; Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly; and British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs James Cleverly.

In the letter they stated that “we welcome the decision announced today by Venezuelan negotiators to restart the dialogue process in Mexico City. We urge the parties to commit in good faith to a comprehensive agreement that will lead to free and fair elections in 2024, the restoration of democratic institutions and an end to the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.”

They also “welcomed” the social table and “the desire of all parties to carry out joint initiatives that will benefit the Venezuelan people and help meet their serious humanitarian needs.”

They thank the United Nations (UN) for this agreement and their role in fulfilling it.

“We believe that participation in negotiations must be inclusive, diverse, and representative of the Venezuelan population to ensure that the deal is lasting,” they said.

“We continue to demand the unconditional release of all those detained unjustly for political reasons, the independence of the electoral process and judiciary, freedom of expression, including for members of the press, and respect for human rights,” they continued. .

They also demonstrated their commitment to the “return of democracy”.

“In this context, we underline the need for the immediate implementation of the recommendations of the EU Election Monitoring Mission in Venezuela 2021 aimed at improving the electoral process in the future,” they stressed.

“We thank Norway for its unwavering dedication to facilitating this process, Mexico for hosting the negotiations, and the democratic actors in Venezuela whose commitment to finding a negotiated solution to the crisis has been steadfast,” they said.

In addition, they will review sanctions if “significant progress” is made, they concluded.
