The king emeritus, Juan Carlos I, has managed to get the Court of Appeal of England and Wales to grant him immunity in the UK to avoid a harassment lawsuit by his former lover, Corina Larsen, who accused him of being behind an espionage situation in 2012, following a breakup.
Larsen filed a lawsuit against Juan Carlos I in 2020, considering that after the breakup of their relationship, the Royal House and CNI tried to discredit him in every possible way.
As reported by BE chainCorinna’s lawyers criticized the pressure on her defense, as well as the illegal surveillance. All this, after refusing to return the 65 million euros supposedly donated by Juan Carlos I in 2012.
The emeritus defense initially tried to prevent the British Judiciary from accepting Larsen’s claim, ensuring that Great Britain had no jurisdiction over the king’s actions. So, after Corinna’s request was accepted, lawyer Juan Carlos I – representing the prestigious Clifford Chance law firm – argued that his client enjoyed immunity since the events occurred between 2012 and 2014, the years in which he was still king.
Corinna’s Defense: “Immune is very limited”
Corinna’s defense stressed, following the Court of Appeal announcement, that the immunity granted to Juan Carlos I was “very limited”. Attorney Michael Kim, of the law firm Kobre & Kim, recalls that the lawsuit had not proceeded since a ruling on the protection the emeritus enjoyed only affecting his government, until 2014.
“Most of the lawsuits are unaffected and must be tried,” the lawyer said in a statement. From his perspective, the facts under fire respond to a longstanding situation of “very serious abuse” and will be examined in detail as the trial progresses.
“Pockets of cash”: Juan Carlos I, obsessed with money
The former lovers were detailed recently, in a podcast titled Corinna and the King, some aspects of her relationship with the Spanish king, whom she accused of being “obsessed” with money. “I saw him coming back from his trip and he was as happy as a five year old, he had a bag full of cash,” he said.
At the same event, Larsen explains how her relationship with Juan Carlos began to take shape while hunting in Castilla-La Mancha. There he is introduced as a weapons expert and since then contact starts to flow in a relationship which is eventually exposed as a result of an accident in Botswana.
“I’m used to crazy levels of wealth. Where all that wealth went is another question,” he revealed on the podcast. “Once he had the money, he was able to lose it thanks to unparalleled talent. It didn’t always show up in the bank account. The tax authorities in Spain must have found nothing there.”
