Malvinas: The government is questioning the deployment of British military units from Kosovo

“Regarding the announcement that was published in the media alleged Kosovo assembly will decide to send up to seven members of the Kosovo Security Force (KBS) to the Falkland Islands in a peace support operation pursuant to the agreement signed with the UK on the incorporation of KBS personnel into the British infantry at Malvinas,” said a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship.

The claim was made last Tuesday by the Malvinas, Antarctic and South Atlantic secretary, Guillermo Carmonaand Deputy Secretary of Foreign Policy, claudo rozencwaigand addressed to the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Buenos Aires, Kirsty Hayes.

Following the formal presentation of the memorandum, the two officials stated that the initiative by the United Kingdom “was unprovoked displays of force and willful deviations from calls for various resolutions United Nations General Assembly and other international forums urging Argentina and the UK to continue negotiations”.

Carmona and Rozencwaig stated that the military presence was contrary to Argentina’s desire to resolve the island sovereignty dispute by peaceful means, and appealed to UN General Assembly resolution 31/49, which “urgently urged both parties to refrain from adopting unilateral decisions involving the introduction of changes to the temporary situation of the Archipelago which is going through a negotiation process recommended by the Assembly itself”.

From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs they also pointed out that it is contrary to General Assembly resolution 41/11 which “urges States in all other regions, in particular militarily important States, to highly respect the South Atlantic region as a zone of peace and cooperationin particular through the reduction and eventual elimination of its military presence in the region”.

Finally, officials reporting to the foreign minister, Santiago Cafiero, reaffirmed Argentina’s sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime space, and reaffirmed the Government’s willingness to continue negotiations to resolve the conflict peacefully.
