MIAMI.- When the thermometer in South Florida drops below 50°F there is a chance that an “iguana will fall” from a tree and become completely paralyzed, a phenomenon known in the region because of the large population of these cold-blooded animals.
Forecasts even suggest that in the main southeastern states, temperatures will reach 40°F on Christmas weekend.. Therefore, it is not surprising that the authorities are warning about this phenomenon.
WHY IGUANA LUMUS?
Iguanas impacted by freezing temperatures in South Florida are nothing new. Several residents noticed the creature, completely motionless and still, in the backyard and falling from a tree in the cold.
“Iguanas are cold blooded. They slow down or freeze as temperatures dip into the 40s,” explains the National Weather Service (NWS). It is important to clarify that they can fall from trees or be completely paralyzed on roads, terraces and sidewalks, but they do not die.
Experts say these animals should not be disturbed or mistreated thinking they are dead, as they will gradually move about under the hot morning sun and rising temperatures.
