President Alberto Fernandes gave a brief speech at the inauguration, together with the Minister of Defence, Jorge Taianaa memorial to Malvinas built by the Tandanor Shipyard in front of the Libertador Building, on the 190th anniversary of the start of Britain’s seizure of the South Atlantic islands.
In this context, he considered it “acts of colonialism” such as the seizure of the Falkland Islands “should shame the whole world” in the 21st century, and calls for “continuing pressing” claims to sovereignty.
“Claiming sovereignty and Argentina enjoying territorial freedoms must attract the attention of the most powerful in the world. We will continue to insist that Malvinas is Argentinian and we are not at peace with ourselves if we do not continue to claim for those who gave their lives and for those who continue to fight,” the president said referring to veterans and soldiers who died during the conflict.

Fernandez also showed that “In that claim there should be no partisan differences” because “on that land is the wealth of Argentina and it is an asset that belongs to us. As long as we don’t integrate it into the territory, we will continue to lack this wealth“, warned the head of state.
After reaffirming that Latin America was a “land of peace”, Fernández asserted that “the only thing Britain has established” on the islands is a “favorable scenario for arming itself in the South Atlantic”.
Meanwhile, Taiana ratified “our commitment to defend sovereignty, look towards the South Atlantic, look at the islands, and look at Antarctica” and said that this is “what guides us”. To which he added: “That’s why a monument that reflects our love for this island is the commitment to continue to work every day in the most effective way possible for the restoration and effective administration of our territory”, said the minister asserting that “we don’t want colonialism in the 21st century”.
“We do not accept this ancient position”, or “the reluctance of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to sit down and talk with Argentina” and anticipating that in the next CELAC meeting to be held in Buenos Aires “we will see how the entire continent supports the sovereign defense position of Argentina and that of the Malvinas Archipelago, for Argentina’s territorial integrity.”
