At the age of 82, Constantine II, the last king of Greece, died

The last king of Greece has arrived health problems and was admitted to the private Ygeia hospital in Athens last week due to breathing problems. A few days ago, her entire family accompanied her to the hospital, including Sofía, who had traveled from Spain to share her last moments of life.

Constantine II ascended the throne in 23 years in 1964 in one of the most important periods of contemporary Greek history. His short reign is marked by political instability and the Colonel’s Dictatorship.

The oath of allegiance Constantine took, as king and head of state, to the military junta provoked great popular hatred. In December of that year he failed in his attempt to overthrow the junta by military coup, and he and his family went into exile.

In June 1973, the military government removed Constantine II from his role as king. Later, when democracy was restored, this was confirmed by a the 1974 national referendum, in which the republican option received almost 70% of the vote.

After his dismissal, he left Greece and lived 40 years in London in a large house in Hampstead, before returning in 2013. Married to Ana Mariasister of Margrethe II, queen of Denmark, have five children.
