The Federal Economic Competition Commission (Cofece or Commission) hosted the final and closing rounds of the sixth edition of MootComp, with the aim of promoting the generation of professional talent in economic competition matters. On this occasion, Law and Economics students from 30 universities in Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru participated in a contest to resolve hypothetical cases of monopolistic practices in the textile sector in writing and through oral hearings in front of leading professionals and academics. .
The event, at which they served as judges, replaced the vacant Cofece commissioner president, Brenda Gisela Hernández Ramírez; Game Economics managing director, Elisa Mariscal, and Barros & Errázuriz Abogados partner, Francisco Bórquez, was undertaken as a joint effort of various Latin American institutions to provide future lawyers and economists a unique experience in their professional lives.
MootComp 2022 winning students receive an intensive seminar on economic competition taught by a well-known academic institution in Mexico; in addition to postgraduate scholarships at various Latin American universities and internships at some of the best law firms in the region, all with the aim of promoting their studies and professional careers in the field of economic competition. This year’s edition winners are:
- Best authority: The Big Three, from the Pontifical Catholic University (Chile).
- Best Official Writing: IBAM, of the Universidad Iberoamericana and the Autonomous Mexican Institute of Technology (Mexico).
- The best economic agent: Goodwins, from Adolfo Ibáñez University (Chile).
- Best economic agent writing: Goodwins, from Adolfo Ibáñez University (Chile).
- Best Lawyer: César Quiñones, from the Big Three team, from the Pontificia Universidad Católica (Chile).
- Best economist: Candelaria Jaramillo, from the Big Three team, from Pontificia Universidad Católica (Chile).
As part of the event’s closing, Cofece’s Director General of Digital Markets, Pedro Isaac Alcalá Berhouague, and Steve Tadelis, from the Business School of the University of California, Berkeley, participated in the panel “Competition in digital markets” , which was moderated by Francisco Bórquez.
