ABU DHABI, JAN 23, 2023 (WAM) — British Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Grant Shapps said in an interview in Abu Dhabi that the energy event hosted by the UAE represents its approach to sustainability.

“I think it’s been an extraordinary year for the UAE for hosting the biggest UN climate conference, COP 28. I have attended the Abu Dhabi sustainability conference. I have attended Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW). This event and discussion shows that the UAE considers sustainability is essential for the future. It is a sign of the UAE’s great leadership in this process.”

The UK is hosting COP 26 in Glasgow in 2021. “The fact that the UAE as a major energy producing country is hosting COP 28 sends a very important message to the world. COP 28 depends on my ministry portfolio in the UK. I will make sure that COP conference in UAE was a success,” he added.

The UAE, continued the minister, has some of the largest solar power projects in the world. “I have visited one in Dubai. It demonstrates the outstanding leadership of a country with so many hydrocarbon resources shifting 25% of its energy production to nuclear power. We are proud to play our part in the UAE’s energy transition. We enjoy being a UAE partner with a relationship special”.

Close energy ties between UK and UAE:

“As an example of how close energy ties are, the UAE has invested in wind power in the UK, which has built one of the largest wind power projects in the world,” the minister said.

Great Britain is the country with the most wind energy. “We have one of the largest wind farms in the world. Right now probably over half of our electricity comes from offshore wind. I think at least one of the projects I can think of might be 4 gigawatts of wind with investment from the UAE.

“So it’s a great partnership. On the other hand, UK companies like BP are helping the UAE transition to clean energy. A lot of big UK companies are investing in Emirates. So it’s a strategic, two-way partnership.”
