Denmark is delaying its plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda pending EU support

COPENHAGEN, 25 Jan. (DPA/EP) –

The Danish government announced this Wednesday that it has decided to temporarily suspend its plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda who arrive on Danish territory pending support from the European Union to carry out this action.

The Migration Minister, Kaare Dybv, has indicated that while the coalition government, elected in November, presents various opinions on how to tackle the problem, it is committed to the issue.

However, he has confirmed that negotiations on setting up a detention center in Rwanda are currently not taking place despite the fact that it was one of the main plans of the Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, before the final death celebrations. election held last November.

However, left-wing parties that support the government oppose this move. The Danish parliament in June 2021 approved a law that would allow detention centers for asylum seekers in third countries.

This will allow authorities to send asylum seekers to non-EU countries while waiting for their applications to be processed in Denmark. In doing so, the country joins the United Kingdom, which was the first to announce the sending of migrants to Rwanda while the application was being processed, although the move caused controversy and for now no transfers have been made.
