DP World agreed to lease the 7,500 m2 of land next door Southampton container terminal developing facilities for truck drivers.
The £15 million project will provide driver welfare facilities, including restaurants, showers, toilets and 24-hour security, as well as increase the size of the storage areas used for containers moving by road and rail.
Ernst Schulze, UK Managing Director at DP World, pointing out that “we are pleased to announce this important step forward in the facility we provide drivers in Southampton, which will help ensure that they are fit and rested to keep the supply chain running. Overnight truck parking will provide access to the convenience they need to do their jobs safely and properly.”
“This new ground will also free up valuable storage space to further expand our rail interconnectivity. Our investment in railways at Southampton and the London Gateway reduces road congestion, with 300,000 trucks being moved off UK roads every year. Last year we launched a new intermodal rail service connecting our logistics hubs at London Gateway and Southampton, as we continue to build our end-to-end capacity.”
The new site, previously used for storage of cars and expected to be fully operational this year, has been leased to the owners of Southampton Port, ABP.
Operating ports, terminals and logistics businesses across six continents, DP World operates the UK’s most advanced logistics hubs at London Gateway and Southampton. Together they moved record cargo volumes in the first half of the year, for a combined total of 1.93 million TEU.
The new driver installation is the latest investment in the UK by DP World. A fourth £350 million bed is under construction at London Gateway, which will increase capacity by a third when it opens in 2024.
