Government of Alberto Fernández revoked the license that Britain had to conduct air services from Sao Paulo in Falkland Islandswith a stopover in Córdoba, Argentina, as Britain refused direct flights to the islands from mainland Argentina.
As explained in a decree signed by the president, Alberto Fernández, published this Tuesday in the Official Gazette, “the priority of the National Executive Powers with respect to the policy of national air relations” with the islands “is resumption of regular direct flights from mainland Argentina”.
“HE have come to this decision after presenting to the UK various initiatives to achieve greater connectivity between mainland Argentina and the Malvinas Islands,” the Foreign Office said.
The Latam company’s flights had been agreed by the two countries in 2018, but were suspended Britainin 2020 amidst the coronavirus pandemic due to sanitation measures.
“British Government has prevented real and concrete progress in the sense of enabling direct flights from our mainland to the islands. Nonetheless, the Argentine government looks forward to continuing talks,” the Argentine foreign ministry said.
For its part, the British government has yet to decide on the matter.
Last week, Argentina ended a 2016 bilateral pact on the islands after taking into account that concessions were made in British interests regarding the exploitation of natural resources in the area.
that decision considered “disappointing” by British authorities.
