ARGENTINA’S RESPONSE

The secretary of Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic at Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guillermo Carmona, went to the Hayes crossing and clarified that the identification process did not begin during Mauricio Macri’s administration.

“Dear Ambassador @AmbKirstyHayes, it is very unfortunate that you are trying to bypass the #Malvinas victim identification process as part of the Joint Communiqué. This is an obligation of international humanitarian law enshrined in an agreement involving the UK, ARG and the ICRC,” said Carmona.

Via a thread of tweets, he pointed out: “It is not true that this process started in 2016 and much less with Foradori-Duncan. This type of approach reveals your government’s reluctance to comply with international law. That his proposal falls within the framework of humanitarian obligations is, besides being regrettable, unacceptable.”

“We confirm the willingness of the Argentine government to continue negotiations on the issue of sovereignty. Please, don’t make humanity a bargaining chip for other interests that undermines the project to identify the fallen,” Carmona said.
