Grøvdal was the first to complete more than eight kilometers. With the win, he emulated the feat from Dublin last year.
The 32-year-old took the lead in Sunday’s competition and looked to be in control up front. Finally a trio appeared with Grøvdal, Turki Yasemin Can and German Konstanze Klosterhalfen.
Can was considered one of Grøvdal’s biggest competitors in the battle for gold, but the Turkish girl ran into trouble after just over half the race. So Grøvdal and Klosterhalfen moved on. Klosterhalfen gave Grøvdal a good fight and also tried to pull away, but Grøvdal held on.
Towards the end, Grøvdal slipped past Klosterhalfen.
