May the force be with you on Star Wars Day

Star Wars Day is celebrated on May 4th because it is a play on words on the famous phrase “may the power be with you” from the saga.

In English, this phrase translates as “may the power be with you”, which sounds similar to “May the fourth be with you” or “four with you”.

This play on words has led Star Wars fans to celebrate May 4th as the day of the saga.

The first time this day was officially celebrated was in 2011, when the British Parliament entered the date into its register.

Since then, the event has grown into an international celebration that includes screenings, fan conventions and other film-related events.

The origin of the phrase Star Wars Day

In the first film in the franchise, Star Wars: A New Hope released in 1977, General Dodonna utters these lines to the rebel alliance as they prepare for their attack on the Death Star.

“Then crew your ship! And may the Force be with you!” said the character.

However, for the first time the phrase “may four be with you” was used on May 4, 1979, when a London journalist congratulated the new British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, on her first day in office.

“May all four be with you, Maggie. Congratulations!” read the full-page ad.

2023 agenda

To celebrate May 4th, Disney+ is launching Star Wars Vision Volume 2a collection of nine anime episodes featuring insights into the Star Wars anthology universe.

The aim of these shorts is to reveal the celebrations that take place in different countries and cultures, through the Star Wars mythos.

The film was made by various animation studios in Japan, India, England, Ireland, Spain, Chile, France, South Africa, South Korea and the United States.

Each sketch lasts between 12 to 15 minutes and are all set in or inspired by the Star Wars universe.
