MADRID, May 5th. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –
Activist and founder of the Wikileaks organization, Julian Assange, has asked King Charles III this Friday to visit him at Belmarsh prison, which is located in south-east London.
Assange’s wife, Stella Assange, has confirmed the request, which was conveyed to the king in a letter. “One can really analyze society by the way it treats its prisoners,” said the journalist, also a journalist, just a day after the king’s coronation ceremony.
“As a political prisoner, held against His Majesty’s will on behalf of a foreign country, I am honored to live within the walls of this high-class institution. Your empire has no boundaries,” he sneered.
So, in a sarcastic vein, Assange has insisted that, during his visit, the king will have the opportunity to “enjoy culinary delights prepared for his loyal subjects on the generous budget of two pounds a day.”
“Taste a mix of tuna head and a reconstituted meal that’s supposed to be made with chicken. And don’t worry, because unlike lesser institutions like Alcatraz or San Quentin, there’s no communal dining room. At Belmarsh, inmates eat alone in their cells, making sure maximum privacy with their food”, he explained.
In this regard, the letter indicated that he would also “have the opportunity to pay homage (…) to a gay man facing deportation to Brazil from (Jair) Bolsonaro, who killed himself just eight meters from my cell with a coarse rope made of their sheets”.
“I implore you, King Charles, to visit His Majesty’s prison at Belmarsh, for it is the honor befitting a king. As you begin your reign, always remember the words of the King James Bible, that blessed are the merciful for they will get mercy”.
Since April 2019, Assange has been held at the high-security Belmarsh prison while facing US charges for violating the Espionage Act. If found guilty, he could face up to 175 years in prison.
