The American drinks Prime Hydration and Prime Energy quickly became very popular in Norway, wrote the Norwegian Food Safety Authority in a press release.

This is especially true for children and adolescents, they wrote.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority believes that the sale of the product is against Norwegian regulations.

– If you add more vitamins, minerals, amino acids, caffeine or other substances than allowed to the drink, it can pose a health risk to consumers, says Are Sletta, section manager in the chemical food safety section of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

Therefore, the drink cannot be sold in Norway, writes the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

For children and adolescents, even low caffeine intake can cause temporary changes in behavior such as restlessness, irritability, nervousness, anxiety and sleep problems, says the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

They are also concerned that Prime products have a high vitamin A content. Excessive intake of vitamin A over a long period of time can cause, among other things, liver damage.

– We are therefore very concerned that the product is marketed aggressively towards children and young people. Products sold include online stores, grocery stores, and even toy stores, said Sletta.
