More than three years after leaving the EU, Britain has announced that it will not scrap all of the bloc’s legislation this year.
On January 31, three years since Britain officially left the European Union. However, even though so long has passed, trouble continues in London.
This Wednesday, the British government announced it no longer intends to abolish all legislation in the European Union by the end of this year.
Rishi Sunak’s government has said it will amend laws currently going through Parliament to propose repeal by the end of 2023 of only about 600 of the nearly 4,000 EU laws still in effect.
Retained EU Laws (REUL) are intended to automatically delete remaining EU laws by the end of this year, unless explicitly selected to be retained.
Business and Commerce Minister Kemi Badenoch said: “The government is presenting amendments that would replace the current extinction bill with a list of retained EU laws that we would like to repeal.”
In addition, he explained that 1,000 EU laws have been repealed or reformed since Britain’s exit from the EU and another 500 will be repealed by two other laws currently in the process of approval in Parliament.
On the other hand, other regulations will continue to apply until prior notice. For the Government, abolition quickly will create a “legal loophole” that has not been resolved by local regulations.
As such, the UK has continued to add to its problems since leaving the community bloc: while the City of London continues to lose power, in the middle of last year the British think tank Center for European Reform estimated that the economy is 5.5% smaller than it would be if the country were still part of the EU.
And, as if this wasn’t enough, Sunak continued to try to keep Scotland and Northern Ireland in England: while the first country demands a new independence referendum, because it doesn’t want to leave the EU, the second country continues to complain that the agreement between London and Brussels keeps it away from the Crown.
