Fast food chain KFC was forced to close more than 700 restaurants this week in the UK due to a shortage of its flagship product: chicken.

In total, more than 700 shops, out of 900 in the UK, remained closed Monday afternoon, according to the US company’s website.

According to AFP, the restaurant chain said on Wednesday that about 450 of its 900 UK stores are still closed due to “operational issues”.

For several days, KFC had been in trouble with German courier company DHL, with which it recently teamed up for the delivery of raw materials.

“We don’t want to compromise on quality and that’s why, in the absence of delivery, some of our restaurants are closed and others only offer part of the menu and at reduced hours,” KFC said in a statement.

In a separate statement, DHL apologized and acknowledged having “operational issues” and was working “with KFC and partners to remedy the situation.”

The fact has caused outrage and even jokes on social networks. “So @KFC ran out of chicken. This is how the apocalypse began,” wrote @jonevans78.
