Emergency services went out Saturday afternoon to report a grass/heather fire in Bømlo and fire services are working to control it.
– Strong smoke development and danger of spreading, wrote the Sør-West police district on Twitter.
The task leader at center 110, Tor Kåre Steinskog, confirmed to TV 2 that several crews are now inspecting the area to find out how big the fire is, and how best to extinguish it.
– There was fire visible from a distance, but it was difficult to get an overview, said Steinskog, who added that it was well visible.
The task manager can’t rule out that it could cause harm to the surrounding buildings, mostly due to the weather in the area.
– It’s windy. Fire in vegetation combined with wind is tricky, especially when it’s dry, says Steinskog.
Switchboard 110 should have received several messages from various places near the fire, confirming the task manager, and mentioning calls from Bømlo and Stord.
The fire service has put out the fire and has plenty of resources available
– It’s burning on both sides of Agavegen, and there’s hilly terrain that makes it hard to get to and get people out, Steinskog said in an update at 5:20 p.m.
Crews from Bremnes, Stord and Mosterhamn are assisting with the suppression work and the fire service has deployed drones, and forest fire helicopters are ready to provide further assistance.
A building has so far been secured, due to the fire.
– It’s not in immediate danger yet, but crews have been dispatched to ascertain whether the fire will spread, the duty manager said, but could not say exactly which building would be in question.
