“I view with concern the possible extradition of journalist Julian Assange. Assange has done an important job exposing the unlawful acts of one country against another. His arrest goes against the defense of democracy and freedom of the press. It is important that we all act in their defense,” Lula wrote on her Twitter account.

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also expressed his support for Assange last April during a meeting with the father and brother of the founder of WikiLeaks, a portal which has been in charge of leaking documents classified as classified material since 2006. which revealed many violations of human rights by the United States during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Assange, who has been jailed in Britain since April 2019 after being arrested after nearly seven years at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, faces 18 criminal charges in the US and will have to answer espionage charges if he is eventually transferred to the country. North America.

The journalist faces a total of 175 years in prison, although the US government maintains that he may serve between four and six years.
