NATO.- The G7 countries finalized the security guarantee framework for Ukraine

VILNIUS, July 12 (from EUROPA PRESS special envoy, Víctor Tuda) –

The G7 countries concluded an agreement to offer security guarantees to Ukraine so that the country can defend against future Russian aggression until it becomes a member of NATO, a sign of support that will come after alliance members expressed their unanimous support for Ukraine’s accession.

“The United States and its many other allies and partners will today launch a process to provide Ukraine with long-term security commitments in the military, economic, and other tools necessary to counter Russian aggression and deter future Russian aggression.” , announced the US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, during a forum on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius, in Lithuania.

In the same way, the UK Government has informed that the UK hopes to agree at the G7 “a new framework to ensure the security of Ukraine in the long term”, according to a statement on the agenda of the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. .

On arrival at the meeting, the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, had assured that he would discuss with NATO leaders security guarantees for Ukraine on its way to NATO, after the allied leaders expressed their unanimous support for Ukraine’s accession, marking a “clear direction” for future entry after the Russian invasion ended.

Few NATO members negotiate these arrangements because allies understand that it is not in the power of military organizations to provide these types of guarantees, which in the NATO lexicon correspond to the Washington treaty’s Article 5 mutual defense clause.

In this context, Zelensky met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he thanked for his support “from the very beginning of Russian aggression” and for his recent visit to Kiev. “We can completely rely on you. We fight for common values. I am very grateful for the support of your government and I am happy to have spoken today,” said the Ukrainian president.

Thus, he stressed that the country needs Canada’s assistance and emphasized that there is “no other option but Ukraine’s accession to NATO”, while highlighting the importance of the security guarantees offered by Trudeau.

Zelensky has taken the opportunity to brief Trudeau on the latest events on the battlefield and discussed the possibility of extending military and technical assistance to the country by the allies until the “temporary liberation of all territories is completed”.

The two have stressed the importance of continuing to protect Ukraine’s skies and “Canada’s participation in the coalition of fighters” and have talked about implementing a peace formula for Ukraine.

Similarly, he has announced a deal with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, for the delivery of more Patriot defense systems, an issue he has described as “critical to protecting the lives of Ukrainian citizens from Russian terrorism”.

“We have returned to talk about security guarantees for Ukraine on the way to NATO,” he said before thanking the German government for its “long-term support.” “The long-term aid program is the best sign to anyone in the world that Europe will continue to be a place of peace and security,” he said in a Telegram message.

On the other hand, Zelenski took the opportunity to set up a meeting with Sunak and speculated that “there will be news”. “Our negotiations always strengthen global security!” he said in a message on his Twitter account.
