great Britain has improved the traffic control system with artificial intelligence with the aim of improving road safety and reducing driving violations. Within the first few weeks of its implementation, the new technology proved effective in detecting and punishing hard-to-recognize infringers for installed devices.
The first AI-powered road surveillance camera has been installed near Launceston, Cornwall, on one of the nation’s busiest roads. In just 72 hours, it has detected 117 people using their cell phones while driving and 130 others not wearing seat belts. Thus, a total of 297 violations were recorded in just three days.
To operate, the camera captures high-quality images of the driver, which are then analyzed by artificial intelligence software to determine whether a violation has been committed.
This capture is accomplished by a set of high shutter speed cameras, an infrared flash and a filter system. If he AI software detects a violation in a photo, the image is sent to the police agency to check if the violation is actually committed.
Furthermore, the driver may receive a warning letter or a prosecution notice depending on the severity of the offence. This technology not only streamlines the traffic code violation detection process, but also makes it possible to address less obvious violations more effectively, which traditional speed cameras often fail to capture.
The project was implemented in collaboration with Acusensus, an Australian technology company, and the organization Vision Zero South West, along with Devon and Cornwall Policein the South of the country.
This is not the first time this system has been implemented, previously in New South Wales, Australia, the same test was conducted with a similar positive result, where the camera reportedly helped reduce road fatalities by twenty per cent.
Additionally, in September 2022, great Britain also carried out a series of similar tests and during the 15 days of testing, 590 cases of people not wearing seat belts and 45 people using cell phones while driving were detected.
The implementation of this technology emerged as a proposal to solve traffic accident cases in Indonesia, bearing in mind that during 2022 there were 48 deaths on the roads and 738 serious injuries in Indonesia. devon and cornwallwhere the test has been carried out.
Adrian Leisk, head of road safety at Devon And Cornwall Police, He pointed out that the technology not only aims to improve road safety, but also has an educational component by sending a clear message to drivers: “anyone who continues to use their phone while driving will be caught out”.
That artificial intelligence This adds to other devices that the authorities currently have, such as the case of sensors, radars and cameras at traffic lights, which have no boundaries for identifying crimes. Meanwhile, with AI it is possible to analyze driver behavior to determine potential violations according to the database that has been provided and trained.
