Based on a report by Daniel Postico, RFI correspondent in London.
To the melody of The Yellow Submarine by The Beatles, but with a chorus where you hear “We are all in the Brexit Tragedy”, the pro-European march in London started this Saturday with thousands of people coming from all over England like this couple from Sheffield.
“We woke up at 6am and it took four hours to get on the bus with anti-Brexit chants,” he explained to RFI one of the protesters. Even though the journey was tiring, those who accompanied him felt like they had to be here.
“Because I am a patriot and I believe in the future of this country and I believe that the future of this country means being closer to our neighbors, our friends and our business partners in Europe,” said another man.
“In the next election we have to get rid of the conservatives because they are criminals,” added one woman.
Many people came here to protest because since Brexit, the country has entered an economic crisis and the quality of life of its citizens has deteriorated.
“It is sad to see our country isolated at a time when we should be working together with our partners and neighbors to overcome the problems we face,” said one young woman.
“I think Brexit is a big mistake made by a corrupt government that only wants to seek its own profit,” said one elderly man.
Polls show that 64% of Britons would vote to remain in the European Union in a new referendum. However, the 67-year-old man said that they did not request another consultation.
“I don’t think a referendum is necessary, just for re-entry. “The economic and political pressure will be so great that whoever comes to power, perhaps the Labor Party with the support of the Liberal Democratic Party, will have no choice but to ask to join first as an associate member and then as a full member,” he said. . .
Another protester, aged 70, recalled that this week the leader of the Labor and Europe Party, Kir Starmer, who is the favorite for next year’s election, said he wanted to be close to the European Union.
“Starmer will be under pressure from his previously expressed view of having closer ties with the European Union,” said another pro-European.
