Officers were seen entering homes and removing handcuffed people, who were placed in the back of a van secured at an undisclosed location.
According to the government, “the operational team at the Ministry of Home Affairs has worked quickly safely and quickly detain people to be transferred to Rwandawith more activities planned in the coming weeks.”
What the law stipulates for deportation to Rwanda
Last week, the British Parliament passed a law allowing deportations to Rwanda, despite criticism from human rights groups that the plan is inhumane and illegal.
The law is a response to the UK Supreme Court decision blocking deportation flights because the government cannot guarantee the safety of migrants sent to Rwanda.
After signing a new agreement with the Kigali government to strengthen migrant protection, the Kigali government London has declared Rwanda a safe country.
