Government United States, United Kingdom and Australia This Tuesday they jointly announced sanctions for two weeks “cyber criminals” from the hacker network Evil Corp, from Russiadue to attacks on banking entities, government organizations, and the public sector.
Among those identified is Maksim Yakubets, who has long been the group’s head and whose United States Department of Justice is offering a reward of 5 million dollars (4.5 million euros).
The US Treasury Department indicates that Evil Corp is a Russian criminal organizationresponsible for infecting the systems of various public and private organizations in dozens of countries to steal information, causing losses of more than 100 million dollars (90 million euros).
“This three-pronged action underscores our collective commitment to protect ourselves from cybercriminals who seek to harm our critical infrastructure and threaten our citizens,” said Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley Smith.
Meanwhile, the British government condemned the group’s alleged links to the Kremlin and the Russian Security Service, highlighting the “mafia style” of its operations.
For the British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, Russia’s ruler, Vladimir Putin, has created a “corrupt mafia state” of which he is the main axis. “These sanctions send a clear message to the Kremlin that we will not tolerate these attacks, either from the country or the cybercrime ecosystem,” he warned.
Those identified are prohibited from entering the three countries and any assets they have there have been frozen.
