Who is María Elisa Quinteros, the new president of the Convention

After nine votes, the Constitutional Convention finally chose María Elisa Quinteros as Elisa Loncon’s successor, who received 78 votes in favor and established herself as the new president of the sample.

Quinteros managed to piece together a position and reverse the complex panorama experienced during Tuesday 4 January, which left many wondering who the new leader of the Convention would be.

María Elisa Quinteros arrived at the Convention via district number 17, He is 39 years old and independent of the Constituent Social Movement.

Specifically, Quinteros is a dentist and dental surgeon at the University of Talca. Subsequently, he completed several diplomas in the fields of Public Health, Trade Union Management and Occupational Health.

In 2013 he obtained a Master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Chile. He has also studied in the same field at universities in India, Italy and England. In 2019, meanwhile, he completed his doctorate in Public Health at the University of Chile.

In the professional field, he worked for eight years in the Department of Health of the City of Hualañé and worked as an academic in the Department of Public Health of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Talca and the University of Santiago.

In the Constitutional Convention, María Elisa Quinteros is known for being part of the Ethics Commission that drafted the regulation. In that case, selected as coordinator along with the conventional Communist Party, Marcos Barraza.

One of his biggest controversies in the Constitutional Convention occurred when he voted against the performance of mandatory PCR tests.

At the time, he explained via his Twitter account that he was against the obligation to “people’s autonomy and because there is inequality in access to PCR in the general population”.

“The preventive measures with the greatest evidence in terms of effectiveness are hand washing, use of masks, physical distancing, ventilation and use of alcohol gel if hand washing is not possible. Emphasize also that health promotion and education are super important, often underestimated by the population,” he said on social networks.
