Within the framework of activities during the 40 years of the Falklands War
President
Alberto Fernandez received today at Casa Rosada Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Prize winner, together with whom he found an author’s work on the steps of Carpani, and then visited the terraces of Malvinas Argentinas on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the start of the South Atlantic war conflict.
“That Argentina restores its territorial integrity is an absolute priority”, said the Head of State and said: “That in the 21st century we are discussing colonialism should bring us shame”.
“We understand war as a war sparked by a dictatorship, but those who fight are our heroes, there is no doubt about that,” said the president, highlighting the Argentine people’s recognition and respect for those who died, their families and veterans of the conflict.
“There is no doubt that the Malvinas Islands are Argentine territory. It is very clear that they are not English. Since 1965, the United Nations has asked Britain to sit down with Argentina to resolve the issue of sovereignty which, clearly, Argentina has the right to do so,” said the President.
During a visit to the terraces of Malvinas Argentinas, the president and Pérez Esquivel observed the aluminum statue with the outline of the Islands, and the national flag which has, in the upper left corner, a judicial certification proving that it was presented in Malvinas on October 1, 1966 to the governor of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic Islands at the time.
The Malvinas War Veterans also participated in the activity, Emilio López, from Salta; Walter Gómez and Juan Fernández, by José C. Paz; Ernesto Alonso, from La Plata, and Sergio Policastro, currently director of Government House. López gave the President the personal decoration he received in Salta on the 20th anniversary of the War, “because Alberto always had his heart in Malvinas.”
The meeting chaired by the President was held within the framework of a broad agenda of events promoted by national governments across the country under the title “The Malvinas unite us” 40 years after the war in the South Atlantic.
As part of this activity, tomorrow there will be special lighting at Casa Rosada in light blue and white, and a video alluding to the anniversary date will be projected on the facade.
Pérez Esquivel received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1980 for his struggle for human rights during Argentina’s last military dictatorship, and was appointed a member of the executive committee of the United Nations Permanent Assembly on the matter.
